How To Remove PS5 Plates Safely Detach And Replace The Console Covers

2 November 2026 | 26

Customizing or maintaining your PlayStation 5 often requires removing the outer console plates, whether you are installing a new M.2 SSD, cleaning out accumulated dust, or swapping to a fresh color scheme. While the process is designed to be user-friendly, applying force incorrectly can risk snapping the internal plastic hooks. Learning the precise technique ensures you can detach and reinstall both covers safely without damaging your hardware.

Preparing Your Console for Plate Removal

Before attempting to remove the outer covers, make sure your console is completely powered off and disconnected from all cables. Allow the device to cool down if it has been running recently to avoid handling warm components. Place the console on a flat, clean surface covered with a soft cloth to prevent scratching the outer casing.

Position the console so that the PlayStation logo or disc drive is facing in the correct direction for the specific plate you intend to remove. Taking a few moments to organize your workspace ensures a smooth and stress-free process. Proper preparation minimizes the risk of accidental slips or physical damage during disassembly.

Removing the Top Cover Safely

To detach the top plate featuring the PlayStation logo, orient the console so the logo is positioned at the top left corner. Firmly grip the top corner near the logo with one hand while holding the bottom edge of the console steady with your other hand. Gently pull the corner up and slightly away from the body to disengage the locking hook.

Once the corner is lifted, slide the entire plate toward the base of the console to free the remaining latches. The cover should slide off smoothly without requiring excessive physical exertion. If you encounter strong resistance, recheck your grip and angle rather than forcing the plastic.

Detaching the Bottom Plate and Cleaning

Removing the bottom cover follows a similar physical motion, though the orientation of the console will differ depending on whether you own a Digital or Disc edition. Lay the console so the power port or disc slot is facing upward toward you. Lift the top corner of the plate slightly and slide the cover downward toward the base to release it from the chassis.

With both plates detached, you gain direct access to the cooling fan intake areas and the M.2 SSD expansion slot. Use a micro-fiber cloth or a gentle vacuum to clear away dust buildup along the dedicated catchers. Regular maintenance at this stage helps keep your system running quietly and efficiently over time.

Reattaching the Console Covers Securely

Reinstalling your original or replacement covers requires aligning the internal hooks with the matching slots along the console frame. Position the plate slightly offset from its final resting spot, near the bottom of the console unit. Press down gently while sliding the plate upward toward the top edge until you hear a distinct clicking sound.

The audible click confirms that all plastic hooks have snapped securely back into their designated locking points. Inspect the edges around the entire perimeter to ensure there are no uneven gaps or loose sections. Once both covers are firmly attached, reconnect your cables and stand to resume normal gaming operations.
